We are often approached for sponsorship or branding advice and we wanted to share a few tips we
have learnt over the years with for drivers and teams.

1. Manage your online reputation.

This is so important and I can’t tell you how often I see this fall by the wayside. I refer in particular to
Facebook, but this relates to anywhere you voice your opinions on the internet. Unless you are looking
for a position in talk back radio, it is best to mind your manners on the web. I see this across
automotive forums and Facebook on a daily basis. Think before you post. I can’t emphasise this
enough. If you want to be rude online and abuse people or swear, remember that there are potential
sponsors reading your comments. They will be forming an opinion of you and chance are it won’t be one
they want associated with their brand.

2. Build your own brand. 

You can start doing this today, you don’t need a team of marketing experts to start building a brand.
Do you have a team name? Do you have a brand page on Facebook? Do you have a You Tube Channel?
If you have friends and family at events, chances are they are already taking photos and video.
Present it in an organised manner through these channels, this is how you begin to shape your brand.
Companies will not want to sponsor you because you have a great idea, or because you’re ‘going’ to
be great. Business owners want a sure thing. You need to already be doing a great job before they
will even want to hear from you. Remember, doing a great job doesn’t always mean being the best either,
you don’t need to be number one to tell a great story. Ever heard of Nate Hamilton?  He’s not the
fastest or in the top level series, but he sure knows how to tell a great story and is reaping the rewards.

3. Create a killer proposal. 

You have about 3 seconds to impress a potential sponsor. Low resolution images? Spelling mistakes?
Out of date content? Forget it. Your proposal will be going in the bin with a pile just like it. It never
fails to astound me that drivers think businesses want to spend money on them. That companies
just have a money tree they can shake and give you a pile of cash so you can go racing for free. You
need to represent a great deal, great exposure, an excellent brand advocate that is honest, trustworthy,
well spoken and polite. You need to remember that you will be representing their brand and they
don’t want you to stuff up the years of hard work they have spent building their own
brand and reputation.

4. It’s not about you anymore. 

So you’ve got sponsors on board. Guess what? It’s not about you anymore. You probably started
in motorsport because you loved it and just went out there to compete because you enjoyed it.
Once you are representing other brands, it really is not just about you anymore. It’s all about
your sponsors now. The one thing that is harder than getting sponsorship is keeping it.
You need to be working for your sponsors all the time. You need to be constantly talking to them.
Asking questions, what are they doing, how can you help? Can you attend their events? Do they
need posters, photos for ads or in-store banners? You need to invest your time and money back into
your sponsors, if you don’t it will be a short lived relationship.

5. Keep doing it. 

There is no such thing as becoming an overnight success. The guys who are at the top of their game
today have had to sacrifice and struggle for every little bit of success they have got. No one is
going to hand it to you, you have to work for it. Just remember that there is no such thing as good luck.
Good luck is what happens when preparation meets opportunity. The process of building a brand can take
years and this is exactly the same for you as a driver or team.

I hope that there are a few pointers that can assist you. These are just my personal opinion from
years of working in and around motorsport. I have experienced both sides, being in charge of
marketing budgets for teams and working with teams to approach organisations for support.
